NLP Language
NLP language is one of the many NLP skills that are used to create rapid changes in your life
NlP language can be broken down into many different things. There are the two main patterns which are the nlp metamodel which is used to CHUNK down questions so that the client or prospect can identify their needs in great detail. These patterns or questions are great for identifying areas where more detail is required such as in planning.
The other pattern that people often think of is the Milton Model. This is where the client or prospect is CHUNKED UP in just such a way that they can see the bigger picture. It is also the basis for Ericksonian hypnotherapy which also uses something known as being “artfully vague”.
The metamodel was modeled on the language that was used by Virginia Satir, who is known as the grandmother of family therapy.
Virginia was a pioneer not only in the way that she used this “nlp language” but also in the way that she approached family therapy as well.
Previously therapists had seen clients on an individual basis . Virginia however deducted that unless all of the parties to a therapeutic problem were involved then a “cure ” was unlikely.
Virhinia would involve all of the family and enjoyed a phenomenal success rate.
There was however more to Virginias success than “Group therapy “.
It was he way that she would use the metamodel nlp language that focussed so tightly on identifying the real issues.
The Milton model on the other hand works in a very different way.
It takes the state of the client above them self so that they see the bigger picture and the consequences of their actions thoughts or beliefs.
Milton Erickson was a famous hypnotherapist who lived in Phoenix, Arizona .
He was famed for his ability to change a person with just one sentence. Just one question was often enough to create remarkable transformations in others.
It is reported that a Psychiatrist once came to see Milton with a particularly “resistant client “. A young man who was a one man crime wave and general pain in the butt. The psychiatrist had tried every form of therapy known to him. All to no avail.
Milton instructed the Psychiatrist to sit in on a chair and the young man to sit in another . Straight away he had established his authority and “OUTRANKED” the psychiatrist.
Milton asked the young man…
” How surprised will you be, when by this time next week you will have completely changed ?”
The young man replied
“I’ll be F*****N surprised ”
“That’s right” said Milton “You will be surprised”
“Goodbye.”
The next week the young man had become a model citizen because he had already agreed on an unconscious level that he would in fact change.
This brings me to another form of NLP language which is presuppositions.
Presuppositions are part of the metamodel and they are where a specific result is assumed expected or pre-supposed..,.
This language pattern is used in sales and marketing quite extensively and is useful for implanting ideas or expectations into the mind of a prospect or client. They can also be used in education and relationships to increase the ease with which someone will learn for instance.
One of the presuppositions and embedded suggestions that was used when I was straining to be an nlp trainer was that it would be easy. And it was. Another was that it would be fun and it was that too.
Embedded suggestions are yet another form of nlp language.
This is where through the use of “artfully vague” language you can suggest things to people in a way that will increase the likelihood of them complying with those suggestions. ( You do understand what I mean hear )
Which brings me quite nicely to conversational ambiguity.
Conversational ambiguity is where the richness of language is used to say one thing and what you say can have several meanings. That’s because the brain is easily confused and will usually follow the suggestions that are stacked in these language patterns. Because your brain nose when to smell a rat in these language patterns it takes quite a bit of practise before you will get the hang of them.
And when it does well everything will come up smelling of roses…
Have fun playing with these…
And remember that because these language patterns are powerful DO NOT misuse them. Do only good.
Heck, politicians have been using them for years to get us to vote for them and just look as at what you got there
